Tipping Culture in India
Unlike the US where tipping is essentially mandatory (15–20%), tipping in India is optional but appreciated. Most Indian restaurants include a service charge (5–10%) in the bill — if this is already added, you are not obligated to tip additionally. However, tipping the person who served you directly (rather than through the restaurant) ensures they personally benefit.

How to Split Bills Fairly
Equal Split
Everyone pays the same regardless of what they ordered. Works best for friends with similar spending habits and similar orders. Quick and avoids awkwardness.
Pay What You Ordered
Each person pays for their own items. More fair but slower. Apps like Splitwise track who owes what and settle debts over time across multiple outings.
Take Turns Paying
One person pays the full bill each time and others pay next time. Works well for regular dining companions with similar spending. No calculation needed each time.
UPI Split
Pay the full bill yourself and request split payments via Google Pay, PhonePe, or Splitwise. Everyone pays their share instantly to your UPI ID within seconds.
